Though the Mangalore-Sakleshpur-Hassan railway line was started in 1979, till today the journey was not smooth. According to a press release issued by the BJP, the chronological events from 1979 till date are as follows:
1993- Railway department decided to convert Bangalore-Hassan railway line into broad guage and the passenger train between Mangalore-Hassan-Bangalore stopped;
1996-Hassan-Bangalore broadguage conversion completes. Hassan-Mangalore Broadguage conversion work commences. However, owing to alleged pressure from Mr Deve Gowda, the funds were diverted to Hassan-Mysore guage conversion and the Hassan-Mangalore guage conversion work halts; Set back to guage conversion work owing to the criticism from the Parliament Committee lead by Justice Khanna;
1998- During the NDA government, BJP urged for the formation of Mangalore division.
2000- Formation of Karnataka Railu Abhivridhi Nigama. As a result, four railway projects including Mangalore-Hassan train service was undertaken with State-Centre partnership 50:50;
2003-Mangalore-Puttur guage conversion completed;
28-12-2003-Mangalore-Kabaka-Puttur passenger train commences;
21-8-2004-Railway Minister for State assures to complete the Mangalore-Hassan guage convesrion in 2004-05;
22-7-2005-Mangalore-Subrahmanya passenger train commences;
November 2005- Subrahmanya-Sakleshpura guage conversion completes;
7-3-2006- Mangalore-Bangalore train service was discussed in Lok Sabha (after Minister R Velu’s assurance turned out to be false);
8-4-2007- Track inspection by CRS;
31-7-2007- Coastal districts MLAs, MPs meet Railway Board Chairman to urge commencement of train service;
23-8-2007- The issue of Mangalore-Bangalore train service discussed in Lok Sabha again;
24-11-2007- Rail-roko in Mangalore railway station.
