The Sringeri Government PU College was again in news with reports of the classrooms of II PUC Arts section being locked up for two days. Over 700 students study in II PUC Arts, Commerce and Science sections. Separate classes are conducted for boys and girls in the college.
However, for all these students, there are just five permanent lecturers. Moreover, the principal of the college was transferred recently and lecturer Umesh has been appointed as the acting principal.
Explaining about the classrooms being locked up, PUC Arts section students alleged that one of the lecturers was asked by the students to deliver lectures loudly and peeved by this the lecturers have boycotted the classes.
They also complained that since one-and-a-half months, the classes have not been conducted for Sociology.
Excepting Kannada, classes for other subjects are not being conducted properly due to shortage of lecturers, they added.
The college principal, refuting these charges, said lecturers have refused to conduct classes due to the unruly behaviour of certain students. He added that a meeting was held with the students and classes will be conducted as usual from Saturday.
Commenting on the incident, college committee president Suvarna Avinash said lecturers have been appointed on contract on a temporary basis due to the shortage of permanent lecturers. Additional classrooms have been conducted in the college and a college playground has also been constructed.
Amidst all this, certain students have been behaving in an unruly manner and if such incidents repeat, disciplinary action will be taken against such students, he warned.
