Karnataka State Police (KSP) continued their superiority over Madras Engineer Group and Centre (MEG) alright, but they could not stop the Sappers from winning the State Association Cup volleyball tournament here on Saturday.
KSP, who suffered a shock loss to an inspired ITI on Friday evening, scored a 3-1 victory to finish with two wins in the four-team Super League. MEG and ITI, who overcame Controllerate of Inspection Electronics (CIL) earlier in the evening, also finished with two wins apiece.
Better ratio
MEG, with a better points-ratio of 1.12, walked away with the title. KSP (1.03) finished second ahead of ITI (1.00). KSP, the State league champions, needed to win big to stay in the title race. Unfortunately, they could do that at the Sree Kanteerava stadium outdoor courts.
Attacker Sanoj tried to do that with his heroics, but the rest of his KSP team-mates, besides gifting too many silly points, fired only in fits and starts.
Having begun the day with a better points-ratio, MEG, led by veterans Premjith and Surendra, did keep the Sappers in the hunt.
But Sanoj's incisive play was the deciding factor for KSP.
Earlier, ITI too were in with a chance to annex the title. Like KSP, they needed to win big and CIL were not in an obliging mood either.
Results: KSP bt MEG 25-18, 18-25, 25-23, 25-21; ITI bt CIL 25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22.
Final standings: MEG 1; KSP 2; ITI 3; CIL 4.
