Manpreet betters shot put record

Manpreet Kaur of Punjab created a new meet record in shot put by throwing to a distance of 13.83 metres in the girls’ U-20 section on the first day of the four-day Reliance 23rd Junior National athletic championship at the IGMC stadium here on Saturday.

Manpreet erased the old mark set by Apalesh of Haryana (12.99M) in Bangalore last year. Neelam (Haryana) and B Anamica (Tamil Nadu) secured the second and third places with 12.42 and 11.79 metres respectively.

In girls’ U-20 high jump, Kavya Muthanna of Karnataka took gold with a clearance of 1.68 metres, ahead of Sijin K of Kerala (1.60M) and P Divya Priya of Tamil Nadu (1.60M).

Uttar Pradesh’s Sandeep Kumar won the boys’ 5000M run under-20 with clocking time of 14:30.5. Virender of Madhya Pradesh and Karan Singh of Haryana got next two places respectively.

Birsa Oram of Orissa claimed the 5000 run under-18 Boys with 15:27.5 seconds. Uttarakhand’s Vineet Malik (15:30.2) and Jai Prakash of Jharkhand (15:32.2) with second and third positions.

JC Thomas (Maharashtra) won the Boys Under-18 High jump with 2.04 and C Nichil Chittarasu (Tamil Nadu) and Pradeep Kaur (Harayana) second and third positions.

Boys: U-20: 5,000M: Sandeep Kumar (UP, 14:30.5) 1; Virender (MP, 15:27.4) 2; Karan Singh (Har, 15:30.7) 3.
U-18: 5,000M: Birsa Oram (Ori, 15:27.5) 1; Vineet Malik (Utt, 15:30.2) 2; Jai Prakash (Jha, 15:32.2) 3.
High jump: JC Thomas (Mah, 2.04M) 1; C Nichil Chittarasu (TN, 2.00) 2; Pardeep Kumar (Har, 1.97) 3.
U-16: Shot put: Vijay Singh (Del, 14.65M) 1; Arjun Kumar (Del, 14.35) 2; Karan Singh (Har, 14.24) 3.
Girls: U-20: Shot put: Manpreet Kaur (Pun, 13.83M) 1; Neelam (Har, 12.42) 2; B Anamica (TN, 11.79) 3.
High jump: Kavya Muthanna (Kar, 1.68M) 1; Sijin K (Ker, 1.60) 2; P Divya Priya (TN, 1.60) 3. 100M hurdles: Anchum M (Ker, 14.8S) 1; Raji CT (Ker, 14.9) 2; V Hani (TN, 15.3) 3.
