A farmer committed suicide by consuming pesticide in Pillavalli village under the Tirumani police station limits on Wednesday night.
The incessant rain which lashed the Pavagada taluk recently had destroyed the groundnut crop in the area. S N Narayanappa (58) had sown groundnut crop in his 14 acres of his land and was heart broken due to the crop loss. He resorted to the extreme step in his field owning to the debt he owed and could no longer repay. The incident came to light when his son went to the field in the morning. It is said that Narayanappa had borrowed more than one lakh rupees of which Rs 50,000 alone from V S S N in Pavagada.
Tahasildar Eshwarappa, MLA Thimmarayappa, Manam Venkatswami and others have visited the place. A case has been registered by the Tirumani police station.
