Gowda, the shrewd politician
Sir,
This refers to the report Gowda sends letter bomb (DH, Nov 2). The timing of H D Deve Gowda’s letter seems to be very important to all the parties concerned. This letter bomb is a lot of worry to the state BJP. For B S Yeddyurappa in particular it may be a great concern.
Gowda’s letter may deter the chances of Yeddyurappa becoming CM as it may act as a proverbial adage –“A slip between the cup and the lip”. The JD(S) supremo is literally trying to control the running of the government if and when formed by proxy through his son, H D Kumaraswamy.
Hope he is not trying to emulate the central government’s way of functioning, where the Left parties are enjoying power without responsibility.
If these dozen conditions are accepted by the BJP, then they will have no freedom of action or say in the running of the government.
No self-respecting party should accept such conditions. It will be interesting to see how BJP will cope up with these conditions if at all they form the government.

Fresh elections
Sir,
BJP should go for fresh elections instead of bending to JD(S) conditions put by H D Deve Gowda. Now he is directly involved in the forthcoming government by setting some conditions to the coalition partner. He has clearly said in his set of conditions that all the crucial issues should be discussed with his son H D Kumaraswamy. It shows that he wants power to rest within his family or family members, that’s why he has not chosen other senior leaders instead of his son.

Not humble
Sir,
It is surprising! Even as a decision on the demand for installation of a BJP-led government is awaited, H D Deve Gowda has set 12 conditions to the BJP so that H D Kumaraswamy can have a major say in decision-making and administration. For this 74-year-old “humble farmer”, occupying the highest political post for 10 months was the highwater mark of his career. But his obsession with Karnataka politics has never waned. Call him whatever, he is not “humble” for sure.

Drama, again!
Sir,
All was well when JD(S) said they would not support BJP in power. Everyone knew what JD(S) was all about. But, what happened after that, gave some credibility to BJP who, inspite of coming close to power, could not really make it. But, just because some people were badly in need of power, the drama has started again. If BJP wants to remain in power, then it has to take the diktat of Gowda and sons.

Backseat driving
Sir,
Apropos Karnataka crisis: Perils of coalition politics (DH, Nov 2) by Nilotpal Basu, perhaps, Basu needs to be reminded that “sordid and bizarre” is what is happening at the centre, with the Left parties allowing a minority government to run, for a price. UPA is succumbing to the threats of the Left, since they dread midterm elections. Some of the UPA's opportunistic alliance was post-election. What is happening in Karnataka today is the same as what the Left is doing from the backseat at the centre
