Deaf art is a distinct art genre. It is based on their deaf experiences. It uses formal art elements combined with innate cultural or physical deaf experiences and their relationship with surroundings and everyday life.
Art show
Swayamwara Art Festival 2007, a grand art show by hearing-impaired artists from different states will take place on November 4 at Patel Inn Resorts in Govinda Raj Garden, Bangalore, giving a platform for hearing impaired artists from different states.
“This art exhibition will serve as a platform for hearing impaired artists to compare their work with that of fellow artists,” says C N Vijayaraj, organiser of the show and trustee of Swayamwara Trust, exclusively engaged in welfare of hearing-impaired. “While in the West there are major art shows like the London Deaf and Disability art Festival, we do not have such an art show for hearing-impaired”,he adds.
Non-stop painting
A non-stop painting by the famous deaf artistist Ganesh will be the attraction of the event. He will paint from 9 am to 4 pm. A lot of other programmes will conducted as part of the event including essay competition, on-the-spot painting competition and dance competition.
“You have to appreciate the fact the dancing to music by deaf people is quite different from normal people dancing. They take a cue in the begining and dance in sync with music, although they do not hear the music. They are assisted by choreographers”, says Vijayaraj.

The Swayamwara Award will be presented to R Venkatesh, a senior hearing-impaired citizen and a well-known artist. Prizes will be distributed to deaf school children who won prizes in essay writing, on-the-spot painting and dance competition.
