Typical Achayan (Christian) roles are Mammootty’s forte. With a hilarious demeanour and dialect, he has portrayed such roles with elan earlier in Sangham, Kottayam Kunjachan and Maravathoor Kanavu. No doubt, the audiences who ensured they were super hits, awaited Nazrani wanting to see Mammootty as the typical Pala-based Christian.
The film might be a big draw, but it is a total letdown too — the culprit being Renjith’s script. It does not elicit a strong performance from Mammootty, nor does it get the best out of director Joshi.
Despite his jovial disposition, David John Kottarathil aka DK (Mammootty), a rich planter and popular figure in the Kottayam belt, is burdened with personal sorrows. His father John (Captain Raju) is serving a sentence after having accidentally killed his friend Eapen (Riza Bava). Though DK and Sarah’s (Vimala Raman as Eapen’s daughter), marriage is called off at the eleventh hour, they continue to be lovebirds.
Things take a dramatic turn with a political murder. With dull scenes and unnecessary characters aplenty, the investigation is hardly thrilling.
Except for Mammootty’s electrifying presence, Nazrani has nothing new. Neither Shaji’s camera work nor Anil Panachooran-Biji Bal’s music score have anything to write home about.
Nazrani doesn’t deserve a glance despite Mammotty at the helm.
