The complaint has also named nine BJP leaders, mostly Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje’s detractors, who attended the function.
Om Prakash Vishnoi of Jodhpur filed the complaint on Friday seeking action against Jaswant Singh and others for reported violation of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act which prohibits custody and use of opium. If proved, the offence is punishable by 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh.
Saffron milk
The complaint says the BJP leader offered to his guests saffron milk laced with opium on Wednesday night at the family function called “riyan” at his native place Jasol in Rajasthan.
Though the BJP leader and his guests, mainly the dissident group in state unit of the party have denied this, the customary ritual has snowballed into a controversy, obviously due to the simmering dissension in the party being fuelled by Singh.
The complaint under the NDPS Act also names senior BJP leaders Raghubir Singh Kaushal and Kailash Meghwal (MPs), Narpat Singh Rajvi, Ghanshyam Tiwari and Madan Dilawar (ministers in Raje cabinet), Mahavir Prasad Jain, chief whip of the party, former state party chief L K Chaturvedi and two BJP MLAs present on the occasion.
Most of the dissatisfied state BJP leaders who played truant at the just held state executive meet in Chittorgarh attended Jaswant Singh’s family function. The differences between Singh and Raje are well known, especially after his wife Ms Sheetal Kanwar lodged a complaint against the CM in the poster controversy.
Welcoming guests by offering opium is a custom in western Rajasthan but the BJP leaders who attended Singh’s function have denied this. Mahavir Prasad Jain said the charges were baseless and were aimed at defaming those who attended “Riyan”.
The Vasundhara Raje government has been quiet so far but it’s believed the controversy has been triggered by those close to her.
