The four-day ‘Students Internet World-2007’ event organised at BVB College of Engineering and Technology concluded here on Thursday.
The event, aimed at creating an awareness about the information technology and Internet among rural students, was jointly organised by the Department of Information and Bio-Technology, the Dharwad district administration, the district science centre, KEONICS, Aptec Computer Centre, the Department of Education and the BSSL.
Around 4,500 students from 60 schools in five taluks of the districts took part in the programme and had first hand information about the Internet. Arrangements were made for providing information about the Internet to 1,125 students everyday.
Students were encouraged to take a keen interest in the Internet by allowing them to surf the Net and get information they wanted on their own. There were 80 systems having Internet connection. The district administration had arranged buses to bring students from various places to the computer centres everyday. Instructors from the KEONICS used to brief about importance of the Internet and how to use it for enhancing their knowledge before allowing them to use the computers.
Inaugurating the event, Deputy Commissioner M S Srikar said that the event would go a long way in spreading computer education in rural areas and building an informed society.
