In an attempt to encourage sporting activities and improve sporting infrastructure in the State, the government is planning to introduce a sports legislation, according to A S Srikanth, Secretary to Government (Youth Services).
Speaking to reporters in Bangalore on Saturday after launching the websites of the Department of Youth Services and Sports, he said the legislation, which will be on the lines of the Kerala Sports Act 2003, will be formulated soon.
“At present only two states in the country — Rajasthan and Kerala — have a sports legislation. We are also in the process of having our own legislation, which will help in improving sporting activities in the State and help produce better sportspersons,” he said.
He added the proposed legislation was still in its initial stages. “The views of sportspersons and sporting associations would be incorporated in it. We will also make a provision for insurance coverage and other benefits for the sportspersons in it,” said Srikanth.
“The Department has called for a conference of sportspersons on November 24 where their views will be taken,” he added.
Websites launched
Srikanth also launched the DYSS websites which will provide easy access to the schemes, programmes, welfare measures and every activity undertaken by the department.
