A wild elephant was killed after it came in contact with a live wire at Jenukallubetta in North Kodagu in Aluwar reserve forest limits on Sunday.
The elephant, aged about 28 years, is said to have arrived in the region with two other elephants and while returning in the morning, one of the elephants’ trunk came in contact with a live wire, thus killing the elephant on the spot.
As soon as the villagers learnt of the incident, they informed the forest department. Somwarpet ACF M Shashidhar, Kushalnagar Forest Officer M S Chinnappa and Madikeri DCF B B Mallesh rushed to the spot. Later, a post mortem was conducted.
Meanwhile, the villagers have appealed to the officials concerned to check the rise in wild elephant menace.
