Astrologers spearheading the ashtamangala devaprasnam at the Guruvayoor Sri Krishna temple have found certain key indications to infer that the deity is upset at the relaxation made to the dress code for women entering the temple.
This was revealed at Guruvayoor by astrologer Irinjalakuda Padmanabha Sharma who is leading a team of nine priests conducting the prasnam which seeks to ascertain the will of the lord after a gap of 17 years. The Guruvayoor devaswom had decided to allow women to wear salwar-kameez in July instead of the traditional saree heeding mostly long-pending requests from north Indian devotees.
Decision was imposed
Devaswom chairman Thottathil Ravindran who spearheaded the change told the ongoing acharya sadas (conclave of senior priests) that the decision was taken only with the concurrence of the supreme priest (tantri). However, senior tantri Chenas Raman Namboodiri and son Satheesan Namboodiri told the meeting that the decision was rather imposed on them by the Devaswom. The astrologer's observation has however been disputed by some priests who say that such an interpretation was made on the basis of a certain omen which can also be ignored.
Since the observations made at devaprasnams are normally followed in letter and spirit, the devaswom may have to reconsider its decision. The dress change has been largely welcomed by the devotees, the devaswom may be forced to take a tough decision. At present, those arriving in salwar-kameez are forced to drape a saree over their costume to enter the temple.
During the devaprasnam which began on October 31, the priests would interpret the deity's mood swings based on astrological procedures on any aspect regarding the temple including rituals, pujas and its general environment. The prasnam would conclude in 10 days when a final report would be given on the rectification measures to make the deity happy.
