Musharraf’s martial law in Pakistan

Sir,

This refers to the editorial titled Emergency in Pakistan (DH, Oct 5). By forcing Emergency in Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf has shown his true colours. He has defied the democratic principles in the country and plunged Pakistan into martial law.

Musharraf has lost all his human values and has shown to the world that he does not care for his own words.
He said he would bring his country under democratic rule, but when he was about to lose power and the judiciary was about to cancel his election, Musharraf has eaten his own words.

He has given all sorts of reasoning to having imposed the Emergency in the country. At least now he should respect the majority opinion of the people and withdraw the Emergency to lead the way for parliamentaryelections.

Power hungry

Sir,

Looks Pakistan is back to square one. Already, the President enjoys all the powers that a ruler could possibly hope to amass. He also holds the posts of the Chief of Army Staff and the supreme commander of the armed forces. What more power does he want? After all, for crushing the militants he will use those very military and paramilitary forces which are already doing the job. Can a general who does not enjoy the people’s mandate really carry the nation along and fight the terrorists alone?

Not a surprise

Sir,

The imposition of Emergency in Pakistan is most unfortunate but not a surprise. Faced with a number of problems, General Pervez Musharraf was trying hard to retain his present position. Banning the telecast of TV channels, arrest of some lawyers and removing Chief Justice Iftikhar Ghan Choudhuri prove that what is happening in Pakistan is no lesser than dictatorship. Pakistan’s leaders must understand that in the present era of world economy no country can progress in isolation. It is to be hoped that the situation will change in Pakistan very soon.

Condemn the act

Sir,

In an unprecedented move, General Musharraf has imposed Emergency in Pakistan, sealing the hopes and fate of returning to democracy. It is highly regrettable and his act needs to be condemned. Now one cannot expect to have free and fair elections in the country. Neither Nawaz Sharif nor Benzair Bhutto can improve the political situation as Musharraf will hold all the aces.

Dress code

Sir,

Apropos your report, regarding the lord in Guruvayur temple being “upset” over women wearing salwar-kameez while entering temple, I think the temple should provide the “appropriate” clothes to the devotees at the entrance. They may collect a security deposit from the devotees to be refunded to them when their clothes are returned after darshan, after deducting suitable laundry charges from the deposit. This will greatly help devotees, who may not be aware of the prevailing dress code in the temple.
