The CBI on Monday made major progress in connection with the mysterious death of IT professional Rizwanur Rahman after the agency officials interrogated Inspector General of West Bengal Police (Enforcement Branch), Nazrul Islam. Mr Nazrul had claimed to be a key witness to intimidation tactics by a section of the Kolkata police.
A three-member CBI team which questioned the IGP for more than two hours at his office, recorded his statement. His version given to the CBI could be extremely damaging for the accused Kolkata police officials as Sadiq, one of the witnesses to the Rizwanur-Priyanka marriage, was threatened on his mobile right in front of the IGP.
Mr Sadiq rushed to Nazrul’s office for assistance when the cops reportedly called from the police headquarters.
The IGP, spoke to Krishnendu Das, a sub-inspector of the anti-rowdy section on Sadiq’s mobile.
He demanded to know why Sadiq was being threatened. After a brief conversation, Mr Das snapped the connection. Nazrul, who narrated this before the media, said that he advised Sadiq to visit him, if he still felt threatened.
Embarrassment
Nazrul’s public statement has put the state government as also former city police commissioner Prasun Mukherjee into a very embarrassing situation.
The Inspector General of Police went on record, stating that he was ready to depose before the court, investigation agency or any inquiry committee about the threat that was handed out to Sadiq.
