Rao pegs back Karnataka

Vinaya Rao returned impressive figures of seven for 93 to help Hyderabad dismiss Karnataka for 267 in 77.5 overs on the opening day of their three-day tie in the South Zone Polly Umrigar (under-15) tournament at Thiruvanathapuram on Monday. Electing to bat first, Karnataka couldn’t get any of their batsmen build on their good starts, only skipper Aman Raj managing to reach half-century (57, 101b, 8x4). Vikram Venkatesh (41), Shreyas Gopal (32) and Samarth (35) failed to convert their starts into big knocks.

In reply, Hyderabad were zero for no loss after facing three balls before the day’s play was called off due to bad light.

Brief scores: Karnataka: 267 all out in 77.5 overs (Aman Raj 57, Vikram Venkatesh 41, Shreyas Gopal 32, Samarth R 35, Vishnukanth 25 n.o.; Vinaya Rao 7-93) vs Hyderabad: 0/0 in 0.3 overs.

2010 WC on top of agenda

Organisation of the 2010 World Cup in India being on top of its agenda, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) will begin its week-long meeting from Tuesday, reports PTI from New Delhi.

FIH President Els Van Breda Vriesman and Secretary General Peter Cohen have already arrived for the meeting and met Indian Hockey Federation officials on Sunday, while other FIH members were scheduled to arrive late on Monday.

“The organisation of the 2010 World Cup in India would be one of the important issues to be discussed. Besides, they will also take stock of the Promotion of Indian Hockey project,” IHF Secretary K Jothikumaran said.

Hockey camp to begin today

The Indian men’s hockey camp in preparation for the Olympic qualifying tournament in March will begin on Tuesday at the Sports Authority of India Southern Centre on the outskirts of Bangalore, reports DHNS. The camp, which was scheduled to begin on Monday, was put off by a day since some of the senior players were yet to report.

Paes jumps to 13th position

Leander Paes jumped four rungs to be 13th, while Mahesh Bhupathi remained static at 21st in the latest ATP Doubles Rankings issued on Monday, reports PTI from New Delhi.

The jump in Paes’ ranking comes despite him and his Czech partner Martin Damm crashing out in the opening round of the Paris Masters last week. Paes has 2745 points. Meanwhile, in the WTA charts, Sania Mirza clung to her 32nd spot with 921 points.

HC dismisses Nimbus suit

The Delhi High Court on Monday dismissed a petition of Nimbus Communication and Board of Control for Cricket in India, seeking encryption of the former’s live feed of cricket matches to public broadcaster Prasar Bharati, reports PTI.

Ronaldo back in AC Milan squad

Brazilian Ronaldo has been included in the AC Milan squad for the first time this season for Tuesday's Champions League trip to Shakhtar Donetsk.

The former Real Madrid striker missed the start of the season because of a niggling leg problem. The 31-year-old is finally fit for a place in the squad but his chances of starting look remote after his lengthy layoff.
