Myth and reality
By Amrit Sadhana

Dreams and myths are part of the collective unconscious, contends Carl Gustav Jung, the famous psychologist.

They are abstract ideas that exist in the unconscious which later materialise as myriad images. The ancients called them "gods" and "goddesses."

So when we worship idols they are basically the creation of our own mind. The myths continue generations after generations because they never die.Because they  are formless, they  perpetuate eternally till someone wants to outgrow them and decides to take a verticle leap of consciousness.

Mythology represents a psychological need of  a race, and the need is of finding heroes who can be deified and then the masses can use them as lighthouses. Matters can be sorted out if there is clarity but when politics and religion are interwoven, things get muddy. This is exactly what is happeing with the new hysteria about Ramayana.

Won't it be much more useful to bring our focus to the bridges that exist today, or the bridges that need to be built so that the transportation can be easy? And what about roads that need to be constructed and repaired so that villagers in remote places can get their supplies easily , reach the hospital or school quickly? One did not hear this kind of uproar or a 'chakka jam' when the  overbridge in Hyderabad collapsed. In fact it needed more attention and protest than a bridge built five thousand years ago.

The myths that have existed for millenium become the bones and marrow of believers. As a result, digging into the Adam's  bridge is like drilling into their own flesh and bones. They have lived on this belief for so long, they cannot let it be drowned in the shallow sea near the bridge, may it be Rama's or Adam's.

Osho never supports any belief because it makes people unconscious. He says, "All your beliefs are dreams.

Maybe you have been dreaming for so long that they appear almost like realities. If you 'know', there is no question of belief. Do you believe in the trees here? Do you believe in the sun which arises every morning? Do you believe in the stars? There is no question of belief.

"Just watch all your acts, all your beliefs, and find out whether they are based in reality, in experience, or based in fear. Anything based in fear has to be dropped immediately, without a second thought. I am speaking against all kinds of beliefs because I want you to know reality. I want you to experience the truth - and the only way to do that is for all your beliefs to be demolished completely, so that you are free to inquire."
