The Right to Information Act if used properly and responsibly can strengthen the democratic polity of the country by bringing responsibility and accountability in the administration said journalist Rishikesh Bahadur Desai.
Speaking on the use of RTI Act at on a one day workshop on ‘Right to Information Act 2005’ organised by the Gulbarga University here on Tuesday, Mr Desai said the RTI was not only aimed at containing corruption in administration but also in ensuring transparency and accountability in various other fields.
He opined that by the extensive use of the act a number of spheres of public life can be strengthened. The Act has come in handy in knowing the assets and liabilities and criminal background of candidates contesting elections to enable people to make an informed choice among the candidates.
Gulbarga University Registrar Pratap Singh Tiwari said the workshop has been organised to establish faith and credibility of the university among people in general and students community in particular. He said that the Act would ensure transparency in administration and empower people.
University Registrar (Evaluation) Mallikarjun Mutt, Mysore Administrative Training Institute Joint Director Rajgopal Rao, law teacher M Sridevi and Amboji of the District Training Institute were the resource persons for the workshop aimed at sensitising university employees about the RTI Act.
