BEML, on Tuesday, inaugurated it’s second rail coach unit at BEML Nagar in Kolar Gold Fields.
The new unit will produce railway wagons and rail coaches for defence and civil applications and for high speed freight corridor. The production capacity is 450 units per annum.
According to BEML Chairman & Managing Director V RS Natarajan in view of increasing requirement of metro coaches, BEML is expanding its railway production capacity. “With opening up of second rail coach unit, BEML’s total railcoach capacity has reached 550 coaches annually,” he added.
“Looking at huge opportunities for metro rail in 15 cities in India with more than three million population, and other upcoming metros in tier II cities, we have earmarked this second unit for metro related products,” he said.
Business groups
Incidentally, the company was awarded contract by Delhi Metro rail Corporation for supply of 156 standard guage metro coaches. BEML has recently restructured its operations under three distinct business groups— mining and construction, defence and rail and metro. “We are hopeful of reaching Rs 1,000 crore turnover in next three to four years from current Rs 100 crore volume of business,” Mr Natarajan said, adding that the company is positively looking at Cochin Metro rail, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai metro.
