Maruti India sales soar past parent Suzuki’s
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, nation’s biggest carmaker, surpassed its parent Suzuki Motor Corp in sales in their respective home markets for the first time as rising incomes in India boosted demand, reports Bloomberg from Singapore/London.
Maruti sold 336,758 cars, vans and sport-utility vehicles in the domestic market between April and September, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers said. That exceeded preliminary 315,000 vehicles Suzuki sold in Japan in the same period, according to spokesman Takuma Mizuyoshi. Suzuki and other carmakers plan to spend more than US$6 billion on new factories to meet surging demand for cars in India. The overseas expansion is meant to compensate for slowing demand in Japan as the population ages.
