Dear Sir,

I am in the final year of my BPT (Physiotherapy) course and would like to pursue my Masters in Sports Medicine in the USA or Canada. Should I go there for a year’s experience? What is the scope for physical therapists in these countries?

Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,

You can definitely pursue a Masters Program in Physiotherapy in USA or Canada since you have 16 years of education. Since our education system lays more emphasis in theory orientation whatever period of work experience one can have before getting into Masters is an advantage. Basically, to get into clinical practice or work you need to clear the local licensing authority prescribed by the respective State even after the Masters programme. Your education there prepares you to face the licensing certifications of any State. There is vast scope for Sports Medicine and it is gaining a lot of importance now. If you are good at your work and have the passion for it you will find your niche. However, to seek admission you need to have GRE and TOEFL scores for entry into the Masters programme.

Dear Sir,

I have completed my BE in computers and have 1 year of working experience. What courses can I apply for which are in demand for my Masters in the US. Is there any site that has all this information?

Himani

Dear Himani,

Your preparation to seek admission into the Masters Program is on the right track. Having worked for a year in the related field you would be in a position to identify for yourself which area of computer Engineering is to your liking. Demand and supply keeps fluctuating depending on the market trends. What has scope for you is the subject that creates passion and makes you take on the challenges. In today's context all fields have equal scope and opportunities. Since you would have appeared for the GRE, already start the application process. If you hasten you may be able to catch up for the spring semester failing which you can surely make it next fall semester. In the meanwhile continue and focus on increasing your work experience in the field you wish to do your Masters in. At this juncture do not look at the emoluments package. You can browse through the following websites for narrowing your subject and University for the Masters Program. www.collegeview.com, www.petersons.com

Dear Sir,

I completed B.Com in 2004 and want to do MBA abroad. Please suggest a country. My TOEFL score is 213. Please mention universities which provide scholarships.

Jyotsna D

Dear Jyotsna,

Your idea of doing an MBA is good. Please be aware that all popular MBA programmes in any country in the world demand a four year degree and a minimum work experience starting from one to even five years. There may be some Universities offering to give you admission based on your three years degree, but they may want you to take up some more courses costing you additional time and money. In addition you will have to clear GMAT. You could think of increasing your TOEFL score also as it may not be high enough for most universities, particularly when you are looking for any kind of financial assistance. Since you already have about 3 years work experience consider applying to some universities in Australia or UK. The universities there have starting from 1 year to 2 year MBA programmes. You could even think of specialised MBA related to the field of your work experience and interest. Also please be aware that  MBA education anywhere abroad costs starting from Rs. 6 lakh to Rs. 15 lakh and scholarships available are very few hence one has to face very competitive selection procedures.

Dear Sir,

I am an EC graduate, looking to explore opportunities of higher education such as MS in the field of VLSI. Could you suggest some university offering this kind of course with scholarship packages? I have heard that Germany is sponsoring international students with excellent academic records. Where can I find more information on the issue and is it a good destination compared to US or UK?

Saurabh Jain

Dear Saurabh,

Yes Germany sponsors students with high academic records. Other countries such as USA and UK also offer very good opportunities. One can get assistantship when one is having high academic record. Browse through the following web sites: www.gradschools.com and www.petersons.com for USA, www.campusgermany.de, www.dadd.de/idp for Germany, www.idp.com and www.studyaustralia.gov.au for Australia, www.educationuk.org for UK.

Dear Sir,

I have completed my graduation in veterinary science and PG in animal genetics and breeding. I would like to study abroad either for a Phd in veterinary microbiology/animal pathology or master degree in the above subject. How can I get financial aid?

Manoj

Dear Manoj,

For those who have achieved excellence in academics chances of getting financial assistance for higher studies and research are high. First of all it is a long route involving a number of steps to get admission into the Phd programme. Try through contacts of your local professors as they may be having contacts with professors abroad who may be carrying on research in the field of your interest or related field. Based on this you decide on which country and which University and start the application procedure. Once you get admission by way of acceptance by the concerned professor and university for research leading to a Phd the University will grant financial assistance. Alternatively you may seek admission to a Masters programme in the same subject by completing GRE and TOEFL, which is a must even for Doctoral programmes or research, and while doing Masters opportunities are more to locate suitable University for Phd programme. This is a long route involving at least 3 to 4 years or even more of your study time. Financial assistance for either Masters or for Phd by way of soft and easily repayable (when you start earning after completing education) bank loans are available through State Bank of India, Canara Bank, Corporation Bank or any other nationalised banks in India. You may also look out in news papers and apply where opportunities are announced for grant of scholarships for research and higher studies abroad.

Dear Sir,

I am doing my second year BE (Mechanical). I want to pursue my higher education in the US. I am planning to write the GRE in the third year. I am dying to get a seat in one of the famous institutes like MIT. What GRE score should I have? I am also confused about what course to take after getting a seat. Please tell me about other famous institutes in the US. Can I get any financial aid?

Rahul Acharya

Dear Rahul,

Aiming for a famous University such as MIT is very good. But also know that that is not the ultimate. There are many other Universities in the US which can give you quality education. First of all decide on your goal as to what career you want to be in. Some Universities are more famous in specific streams while others will be in some others. Mechanical engineering is a basic stream of engineering, from which point you can move on to many streams. Starting from continuing in Mechanical Engineering moving on to Computer Hardware and Soft ware to Aeronautical Engineering and many other streams are open to you and in US it is much easier to switch over, but you need to know where you want to be. I suggest you go through a psychometric aptitude test, which will help you to narrow down your choice by matching your aptitude with interest. It is not just the GRE score that decides your admission but also the academic performance as well as the zest to pursue your dream, which can be made known by your essay for admission.

Financial aid is another area, which one has to try. It is competitive as many would be looking for financial assistance. You may have to be prepared to study with family funding or loans till your trial succeeds. There are good chances for those with high academic achievements.

Dear Sir,

My husband is a ITI holder with a 2 year trade certificate course in civil engineering d`ship.  Right now he has got an expericne of 14 years working in various companies in India and abroad and is currently working in Dubai for a construction company. He wants to do an engineering course in civil, and become an engineer. Can you please let me know if he can do this by correspondence, since there are no such evening courses offered in the UAE? Also which site can I refer in the web regarding this?

Safeena

Dear Safeena,

There are many Universities all over the world offering courses in a variety of technical subjects including civil engineering online degrees. Browse through the following web sites for specific course and other relevant details.
www.bachelordegrees.net , www.online-education-search.org , www.career-college.org , www.onlinedegreeadvantage.com , www.onlinedegreessite.com , www.distancelearning.hobsons.com , www.onlinecollegedegree.net

Dear Sir,

My son is studying in the final year of MSc (Micro) and after completion, he would like to go to the US for further studies. I want to know what courses he will be eligible for (like MD Medical Microbiology, MS General Microbiology) and or PhD in (Micro) and what will be the cost per annum, fee and lodging etc), and which universities are offering the respective courses and how much he would be able to earn?

Sajjad Zaheer Ahmed

Dear Sajjad Ahmed,

By virtue of having done his MSc your son will be eligible to join an MS programme in US in general microbiology. Since the admission requirement for MS in US is 16 years of education, he can negotiate with the University that he chooses to give more course credits (for having studied one year more) by which he may be able to complete his Masters earlier than the 4 semesters.  Later on while doing MS he can narrow down his field for research in order to take a PhD.

Course fee for a typical MS programme is around Rs 4.5 lakh per year in State colleges and living expenditure comes to around rupees 3.5 lakh per year. Most often depending upon which part of US they stay the wages coming from 20 hours permissible work time will take care of the living expenditure.

There are many universities offering this programme. One can narrow down depending on their academic record and GRE and TOEFL scores. You may log on to the following web sites to search for universities. www.petersons.co, www.collegeview.com, and www.collegebot.com.

How much he will be able to earn is anybody's guess. It all depends on the interest he takes and the opportunities that he makes use of and the kind of hard work that he can put in.
