DH News Service, Kolar:
It was jointly organised by District Legal services authority, District central advocates association, District health and family welfare department District hospital and Sri Devraj Urs Medical college.

B V Prakash, judge at the fourth fast track court , has said that the  increasing  amount of mental stress has given  rise  to mental problems in the  society. “This  is a  serious problem that need to be  addressed immediately and all of us  should give it the necessary attention” he added.

The  judge was speaking after inaugurating programme giving  psychiatric free check up and legal awareness  for the mentally unsound on the occasion of World Mental Health Day and Week on wednesday. It was  jointly organised by District Legal services authority, District central advocates association, District health and family  welfare  department District hospital and Sri Devraj Urs Medical college.

“ Every body is a little crazy and we just need determine the how much of craziness exists in each one of us. While medicine can find a answer to all the bodily ailments in the laboratory, it cannot keep the  brain in there and determine and exact answer to the mental problems” was his opinion.

He added that the it was important for us to reduce our expectations from our selves and life in general. He  also advised the regular and limited yoga  also went a long way in keeping the mind under control.

Mallikarjuna Kinikere, Principal Civil Judge and Secretary of the District Legal Authority also spoke on the  occasion. “Every year more than  4.50 crore people commit suicide because of mental stress. That number is about  one lakh in our country. The heart and mind are very sensitive and therefore even the slightest disturbance to them cane  cause  severe repercussions.” he added.

Kinikere also informed the gathering that studies have shown that the one of every four patients who visit hospital has a mental ailment.

He also commented on the  lack of psychiatrists in the country and said that there were only 3200 of them in India. “It is only in Karnataka that we have  two mental health  facilities in Bangalore and  Dharwad” he added.
He also called on everyone to play a role in reducing the  number of people who  are falling prey to this silent killer.

“ If we are able to live a normal and simple life and reduce our expectations, then all will be  fine with our mind.” was his opinion. He also added that people are increasingly moving  away from  reality and  would  like to exist in a dream world and this is another reason for their  mental  problems.
