Residents of the area have alleged that some miscreants have made use of the opportunity afforded by the night-long vigil on account of Ramzan to vandalise public property. Street lamps were broken in Jai Bheem Nagar, Sadhumatha Street, Venugopala Swamy Temple Street and Gangamma Gudi Street as well.
It has been reported that around 10 pm, an old man chided a group of boisterous youth, who were on a lamp-breaking binge near Gangamma Gudi. But the group threatened the gentleman before proceeding to break more street lamps.
According to eyewitnesses, the group comprised of youth aged around 15 years. Using long sticks, stones etc, the members of the group were intent on notching up a record for breaking the most number of lamps.
The miscreants utilised the opportunity created by no power supply for a long time in the night. An angry resident was seen complaining that instead of taking up constructive activities, the miscreants had damaged public property. Lack of parental guidance is the main cause of such delinquent behaviour, he fumed.
Shards of glass were strewn all over the streets. People getting injured by stepping on the glass has been reported from Prashant Nagar.
Meanwhile, Municipal employees were busy replacing the broken lamps on Wednesday morning. The residents however are peeved that the incident is becoming an annual occurrence.
