The proscribed ULFA on Sunday resumed its terror-strikes in eastern Assam, triggering two blasts that killed five and left at least 28 injured. The rebel outfit also gunned down one of its deserters and blew up an oil pipeline.
The Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) D K Pathak said the outfit triggered two back-to-back blasts in Tinsukia and Doomdooma in eastern Assam. While three persons were killed and 18 injured in the blast in Tinsukia, the explosion at Doomdooma killed two and left six hurt, he added.
Mr Pathak said the men who got killed in the blast at Doomdooma are suspected to be ULFA militants and were possibly carrying the explosive device that went off accidentally.
Since last January, the ULFA has been targeting Hindi-speaking people in eastern Assam. The community was the target of the strikes on Sunday too.
The first blast took place in Tinsukia’s Devipukhri Tiniali, an area known to be inhabited mostly by the Hindi-speaking people. The target for the second blast that went awry was also the shop of a Hindi-speaking trader in Doomdooma.
Two youths, who came with the explosives got killed and six others were injured in the blast. The police and CRPF personnel were frisking people.
