Pipe leak contaminates water supply
DH News Service, Bagepalli:
Controversies seem never ending in the case of the Paragodu Chitravathi Dam. The people who had to fight for a dam to address their drinking water issue, are now forced to do the same again.

A month ago, the residents were overjoyed to see the dam filling up. Their relief was more pronounced as a full dam meant that people no longer had to drink water contaminated with excess fluoride.

However, the maintenance of the water supply is so pathetic that the people are unable to make use of the water even after a month.

The water released from the dam has a muddy, reddish hue, resembling a creamy tea concoction. Consumption of this water is a sure way to fall sick, is the medical opinion. Mud gets collected in the bottom if water is stored for sometime. In such a situation, it is hardly surprising that people are wary of using this water.

Each day, people are lining up in front of the Municipal office with bottles to show officials. Yet, there has been no impact at all. The public is peeved that even the newly elected representatives are silent on the matter despite several pleas.

Several months have passed since the huge pipes that supply water from the dam to the filtering units have broken. This, when hardly two years have passed since the dam was completed. Quality seems to have been given a go-by in this case. Water is leaking away continuously from these pipes. But those entrusted with the maintenance of these pipes have chosen to cover the holes with sandbags and cement covers. This naturally gives room for water contamination. The people are annoyed over the attitude of Municipal authorities in the matter and hope for a solution.
