Most of the students doing job along with the studies belong to middle class and upper middle class. But still a majority do not dare to step into this kind of independent earning thinking that they will lose their dignity. Even parents and educational institutions are not supportive.
Boys wearing caps and T-shirts with company logos delivering advertisements and feedback forms are no more new to the City. Some may be serving you in a coffee shop. You may find these same guys in college campuses and cinema halls roaming with their gang of friends. Yes! they are college students earning from part time jobs. It is a positive part of the same western influence that we often blame for destroying our culture.
Most of the students doing job along with the studies belong to middle class and upper middle class. But still a majority do not dare to step into this kind of independent earning thinking that they will lose their dignity. Even parents and educational institutions are not supportive. College timing from 9 am to 5 pm and strict attendance patterns don't provide a supportive situation. The nuclear family systems where parents spend their whole life earning for their children, usually find their children’s education as their prime responsibility. They may find it as something that divert their children from their studies.
“I don’t get much free time and is going through a hectic college schedule. If time allows I will be able to do more thus gaining some self satisfaction. Apart from earning pocket money of my own, I feel more relaxed in this different life style. It gives a wonderful experience to interact with people even though some are not co-operative. My course costs nearly 4.5 lakh and is paid by my parents. By doing this I can atleast make my own pocket money”, says Swaroop, an Aeronautical Engineering student.
These guys are usually being paid a sum of Rs 500-700 per day. Usually a target is given, but there is no job pressure for them. A general trends shows that no one is saving this money. They spent it for food and other entertainment. Even though the City is in demand for more part time workers, most of the students are not ready to work.
But the changing trend is visible with the increase in demand.“Our society is not that supportive. But we are feeling more responsible after doing the job. This is surely not going to help later in our professional life. But it is a different experience”, says Thalish, another student.
Western educational system is set in such a way to make youth more responsible and independent. We are spending a major portion of our life to the learning process.
Responsible and energetic youth is an asset of the nation. For that it is advisable to let them go out and face the real world than always spending time in class rooms and with friends.
