Swapan Nayak, a photo journalist with a keen interest in socio-economic issues, attempts to present lives of people caught amidst natural calamities and violence through his photography collection called ‘Nowhere people’ and ‘Refugees in their own land’.
Life is an endless misery during the monsoon months for many villages and its inhabitants in the state of Assam. There is not an inch of dry land. These landless people take shelter in newly raised islands or nearby towns working as farm hands, which further reduces their incomes. But jobs are not the only missing lifeline in these islands.
There is lack of medical facilities and other amenities like potable water, electricity, schools etc. Swapan Nayak’s ‘Nowhere people’ represents life in these conditions.
In ‘Refugees in their own Land’, Swapan’s photography brings out the war between ethnic groups in North-East India and the severe repercussions on its people.
An exhibition of his work is at Tasveer, Sua House, 26/1, Kasturba Cross Road till October 25 between 11 am and 6 pm.
