A young woman sub inspector was dismissed from service by the Goa Police on Wednesday on incontrovertible evidence that she had sought a bribe from a Mumbai resident detained on a minor drug offense.
Sandhya Gupta, a PSI with the anti-narcotics cell was caught on tape asking for a bribe of Rs 40,000 to allow Sunil Datwani to travel to Mumbai for a few days against the court’s directives. Datwani, 25, who worked in the production unit of a television channel, had been booked by the ANC last month after a raid on a private party in Anjuna. He was carrying 9 gms of charas.
Tired of the persistent harassment by the woman PSI, Datwani’s mother lodged a complaint with the anti-corruption bureau which helped nab a constable receiving the bribe on Gupta’s behalf earlier this week.
Goa’s director general of police B S Brar who was firm in dealing with the corrupt PSI said: “People have faith in the police. An incident like this would only serve to weaken that trust.”
More bizarre though is the educated, dismissed PSI’s track record for graft. Police officials said the woman cop had notched up a reputation for raiding restaurants and shacks on the tourist coast who failed to pay her and her team a regular hafta. The shacks provided her gourmet meals to keep her off their backs. Gupta had once been put on notice by the department for stealing expensive plants from a government building. “She survived because of her proximity to some of her seniors,” they said.
