The militants were killed in an early morning assault launched by police and security forces, Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda told reporters.

The slain militants have been identified as Abu Hashim and Abu Zahid, both Pakistani nationals, as per the documents recovered from them, the DGP said, adding two ak-56 rifles, eight magazines, four hand grenades, 52 rounds and one mobile phone was recovered from them.

Three CRPF personnel received minor injuries in the attack.

The two heavily-armed militants had made an attempt to storm the CRPF camp at Hotel Boulevard last evening by hurling grenades. However, the jawans were quick to react, forcing the militants to take refuge in th parking area next to the security forces' camp.

Khoda said while the militants took positions around the junk lying in the parking lot, police and CRPF personnel cordoned off the area, leading to a fierce gunbattle.

To minimise the casualties and to avoid collateral damage to the nearby commercial property, night assault was avoided and close quarter battle weapons were used, he added. The attacks took place at a time when Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad was hosting an iftar party at nearby Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC).

However, security officials said the attack had no connection with the Chief Minister's party.

Asked about the unilateral ceasefire announced by the conglomerate of militant outfits, United Jehad Council, the DGP said "We have to be prepared. We cannot afford to relax".

Militancy-related violence in Kashmir valley has increased over the past two weeks with more than 50 people getting killed.

Khoda said infiltration from across the Line of Control was going on but the security apparatus in the state was geared up to meet the challenge head on.

Militant groups like Lashkar, Al Badr, Jaish-e -Mohammad and Hizbul Mujahideen continue to infiltrate from across the LoC, he added.
