Having backed up his word of dishing out the best show in the series, Ricky Ponting said his team outplayed India through and through. “I think we outperformed them today totally. We got an early run out and Brett (Lee) bowled a great new ball spell,” he said.
The defeat in the last match had indeed pricked the Aussies hard and they seemed to have decided to teach a lesson to the hosts. “We assessed our performance in the last game. I don't think we played badly in that game, we were just a little bit loose in the field here and there. We tried and tied up all those loose areas and improved upon other areas that we have been doing well in this series. I expect us to play better game by game and we certainly played our best game today so far in the series. The bowling, fielding and everything was first class and then to chase the total under a bit difficult conditions against spinners was very comprehensive,” he elaborated.
Though Indians looked like scalded cats against Aussie pacemen, Ponting felt it was a good pitch to bat especially in the first session. “Looking at the wicket this morning I thought it's going to be a great wicket to bat first and I think we proved that. It was going to spin a little bit later in the day though. If they had got some big or reasonable total, it would have been a hard chase for us. But we just didn't give them those chances to score runs. We bowled beautifully and held our chances,” he explained.
After struggling against spinners in the previous game, Australian batsmen came on top against Indian slow bowlers, especially, Murali Kartik for whom they seemed to have a specific plan. The modest target though might have helped them cut loose against the left-arm spinner.
“We did have a little bit of nets yesterday and we knew our preparations were well for this game looking at the conditions. Obviously, you pick up your skills from the last game,” said Ponting, who had long nets facing the left-arm spinners.
Ponting didn't agree that Indians looked complacent, but added he could not care less about it. “I don't know if India were complacent and I don't know if they were expecting things to happen to them. We don't even think about that. We try and prepare as well as we can and try and execute our plans as well as we did today,” he said.
The Australian skipper admitted he was not surprised with the way his players have bounced back after losing the last game “I am not surprised with the way the guys have bounced back. I know how much effort they put in, I know how skilled and talented this Australian side is,” he said.
