The Supreme Court, on Thursday, stayed all the criminal proceedings against former Tata Steel (erstwhile Tata Iron and Steel Co) joint managing director and Tata Sons Director JJ Irani in connection with a fire incident in the company's Jamshedpur factory some 28 years ago. The blaze had killed killed 60 persons and injured 113 others.
A bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat while staying the proceedings before the Chief Judicial Magistrate also issued notice to Jharkhand government on Irani's plea.
Irani had challenged the High Court at Ranchi order that allowed three criminal revisions filed by the Jharkhand government and remitted the cases back to Magistrate to proceed in accordance with law.
Senior counsel F S Nariman contended that the state had prolonged the issue and the three complaints filed by the state were dismissed by the Magistrate in 1990 on the ground that they were barred by limitation under the Factories Act 1948.
