BBMP, which threw open all covered storm water drains, which have turned into foul smelling septic tanks due to illegal connection of sewerage lines, is inviting a major health risk by turning Bangalore into a city of drains and stink.
The so-called storm water drains were opened up with alacrity during the recent rain in the belief that water would flow freely. But the same enthusiasm was lacking to clean up the clogged drains and cover them.
Residents of Palmgrove Road in Victoria Layout, just a hop, skip and jump from Mayo Hall, have been living with this veritable health hazard for the last four months, all pleas to BBMP in vain.
Though work on a collapsed road bridge began two days ago, that too in deference to a Lok Adalat’s direction, the citizens are completely in the dark as to whether the disease-breeding drains will be ever closed, at least in a manner that will allow periodic cleaning. The next hearing of the Adalat is slated for October end and the residents are pinning all hopes on legal remedy.
