LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Congress’ political immaturity in the open

Sir,

With the Left parties effectively stalling any further discussions on the Indo-US nuclear deal, it is held up until a full fledged discussion in Parliament is over.

The US is reconciled with this development, it seems. The Congress party is also receding into the background.

This brings out two issues. First, a smaller group like the Left with less than 10 per cent of seats in the Parliament can stall a deal as significant as it was made out to be by the Congress party surely gives high praise to the Left on their political ability.

Secondly, the manner in which the Congress dealt with the issue is a sad comment on its present leadership and their political acumen where it has come out almost as if the tail was controlling the elephant.

Further with talk about mid-term elections on the issue of the Indo-US nuclear deal, the Congress leadership showed a high degree of political immaturity by willing to stake their government on the deal.

Not having consulted their partners in the UPA may affect the Congress party and its leadership in the future.

Political novices

Sir,

In UPA’s three year tenure, no other issue has generated so much passion and controversy as the Indo-US nuclear deal. It is argued that the civil nuclear cooperation agreement with the US has far reaching implications to the security and sovereignty of the nation.

The UPA should have initiated a national debate on this before irrevocably committing the nation and the future governments to the deal. From the beginning this government did not take the Opposition parties and its allies into confidence. This sordid affair has shown that Prime Minister Singh and the Congress chief Sonia Gandhi are just political novices.

Religious harmony

Sir,

The most treacherous and disgraceful bomb blast in Ajmer is an act of ruthless, reckless and mindless vandals.

The only consolation is that it was a low intensity bomb kept in a tiffin box, killing only three persons, but sparing the mazar.

It is also possible that a Muslim group which has been spitting venom on the Sufi saints is involved in the incident. Hindus and Muslims should form squads to protect temples and shrines and fight unitedly against terrorists and other anti-social harmony enemies.

Ask Godmen

Sir,

After losing power, H D Kumaraswamy is busy visiting temples, meeting religious leaders and astrologers. One astrologer has asked Mr Kumaraswamy to go for elections.

The other day, when BJP leaders also met the same astrologer, he had made a statement that if they (BJP) did what he suggested, they might rule the state. I think we do not need any constitutional or legal experts to solve such crisises and we can just depend upon the so-called astrologers, godmen, who can give good advice to these people who are supposed to rule us!!!

Dismal performance

Sir,

There is no need to say that India’s was a dismal performance at the Vadodara ODI, but the glaring factor to be noticed is the failure by the seniors yet again! If Rahul Dravid cannot bring down his bat quickly to meet the ball, and if Sourav Ganguly could not regain his crease in time after going for a run which was not there, it only shows they are aged and are not suitable anymore for the 50 over format!
