‘US torturing prisoners’
The US breaks international law by torturing prisoners, ex-president Jimmy Carter has said, AP reports from New York. “We’ve said that the Geneva conventions do not apply to those people in Abu Ghraib prison and Guantánamo, and we’ve said we can torture prisoners,” he told CNN.
He spoke out after George Bush defended “harsh interrogation techniques”. The former president said the methods, including “head-slapping, simulated drowning and frigid temperatures”, did constitute torture.
The homeless chess king
He sleeps on a bench, but he is king of chess during the day dazzling all and sundry, AP reports from Washington. Tom Murphy, 49, makes what little money he has from teaching the game to passersby.
“He has the title of expert in chess. This is the second highest American title. It means he is good,” said Washington’s Chess Centre director David Mehler.
