Celebrity recital
Bangalore School of Music in association is presenting a Celebrity recital by two highly accomplished South African Artistes, Berthine Van Schoor (Cello) & Albie Van Schalkwyk (Piano). This concert will take place on October 13 at 7:30 p.m at the Chancery Pavilion, Residency Road.
The duo will perform works of Vivaldi, Dvorak, Mozart and Chopin and two unusual pieces will be Kriya by Ram and African Moods by Jonson.
After studies in Bloemfontein, Cape Town and London Albie van Schalkwyk took up the position of Official Accompanist and Producer at the SABC in Cape Town and became the regular partner of many South African singers and instrumentalists in concert and in the recording studio. He then held teaching positions at the University of the North West and UCT before settling in Bloemfontein in 1997 where he teaches piano and chamber music at the University of the Free State. He was appointed Departmental Chairman in September 2006. Albie has been a member of several SA ensembles like Endler Trio and the Potch Trio. He was also a founder member of The Chamber Music Society, which has produced three CD's on the international market.
Berthine van Schoor is one of South Africa’s most accomplished cellists. After receiving her B Mus Honours (cum laude) at the University of Stellenbosch, she furthered her studies in Salzburg, Austria under Prof Heidi Litschauer at the world-renowned Mozarteum. She completed a Konzert Diplom as well as M. Mus (Performing). During her 11 years in Austria, she toured throughout Europe and Japan as a member of various chamber and symphony orchestras under famous conductors such as Claudio Abbado and Franz Welser- Most.
Berthine has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician and is well-known for her burnished tone and her interest in unusual repertoire. She has performed with orchestras in South Africa, Austria and Germany and was the principal cellist of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Bad Reichenhall in Germany as well as the Salzburg Mozart Chamber Orchestra. Jewellery exhibition
Ganjam showcases rare jewellery exhibits from the Ganjam family archive, together with its Ganjam Heritage and contemporary Classic collections. The exhibition-cum-sale is at the Ganjam Mantapa, 84 Bull Temple Road, Basavangudi from October 13 to 15 from 11 am to 8.30 pm. Contact 9880166115.
Seminar on Narasimhaswamy
BHS First Grade College, IV Block, Jayanagar is organising a seminar on the poet K S Narasimhaswamy from October 15, 16 and 17 at Prof B V Narayan Rao hall in the College premises. On October 15 at 10 am Prof L S Seshagiri Rao will inaugurate the seminar and Prof G S Siddalingaiah will deliver the Prof Narahalli Balasubramanya will deliver lecture.
On October 16 at 10 am C Ashwath, Dr H S Raghavendra Rao and Prof O L Nagabhushan Swamy, Dr Rahmath Tarikere and B R Lakshman Rao will participate. On October 17 Dr H S Muralidhar, Dr L G Meera, Dr G B Harish, Dr Giraddi Govindaraja, Dr H S V enkatesh Murthy, Prof B V Narayan Rao and Prof R V Prabhakar will participate.
Silver jubilee celebrations
Sowmya Vrinda, a sugama sangeeth (light music) troupe is observing its silver jubilee on October 14 at 10.30 am at National College auditorium, Basavanagudi. N Padmaja Kumari, Registrar, Department of Kannada and Culture, Kannada Bhavan will be the chief guest. A H Rama Rao, National Education Society of Karnataka presides. Mementos will be presented to the members of the troupe. There will be a light music performance by Sowmya Vrinda.
A novel collection
Sree Swarna Lakshmi Collections from Chennai, a sister concern of Sri Sai Lakshmi Collections in Bangalore, will showcase a range of handloom sarees and dress materials with focus on traditional weaves blended with contemporary designs.
