City’s cine collective Sine Matu, this Sunday, is screening the award-winning Kannada feature film Matadana directed by noted film director T N Seetaram as part of its convervations with cinema series to inculcate better appreciation, understanding and imbibe finer nuances of film aesthetics among diaspora and aspiring cinephiles.
Spotlight on politics
Based on eminent Kannada writer S L Byrappa’s novella (unique for their theme, structure, as also characterisation) of the same name, the film, starkly spotlights the effects of politics and corruption on an ordinary family.
Lakshmi, the daughter of Ramalinga Gowda, an honest man becomes involved in forthcoming elections. However, she is unwittingly used as a pawn and her marriage fixed with one of the candidates. She, however, in love with an idealist Dr Shivappa and champion of the poor, who too is sucked into quagmire of the poll politics.
Awards
The film, a debut directiorial essay Seetaram won the Best Regional Film Award at the 48th National Film Awards, succinctly reveals the caste and other dynamics that grip the democratic institution of ballot box in India.
The screening of the film will be followed by discussion with the director and various team members of the crew. The film stars Ananthnag, Tara, Hemant Hegde, Vashisht, Avinash, Aswath and Devaraj and boasts of background score by C Ashwath and V Manohar.
