BEL atop table after win
DH News Service, Bangalore:
Bharat Electronics Limited's (BEL) impressive season touched a new high with a clinical 5-0 rout of Postal in the Super Division football league.

Bharat Electronics Limited’s (BEL) impressive season touched a new high with a clinical 5-0 rout of Postal in the Super Division football league at the Bangalore Football Stadium here on Friday.

Riding on an early burst, BEL sealed victory to climb atop the league table with 16 points from seven matches.
Just three minutes into the game, striker Stephen put them ahead, accepting a fine pass from Lal on the right.

Postal had hardly recovered from that early shock when they received another jolt in the very next minute.

Forward Aravind deceived the defence with a smart turn and produced a neat lob from the top of the box, way above a charging Postal goalkeeper Ravindran.

Tough fight

Quickly regrouping, Postal fought hard but BEL custodian Suresh stood in their way with two reflex saves.

Einstein’s attempt was tipped away with a stunning right-hand effort in the 13th minute while a Srinivas drive was blocked with aplomb eleven minutes later. Even as Postal’s frequent attacks did not allow their opponents to sit pretty on the lead, BEL caught the rival defence off-guard with their flashy moves, particularly through counter-attacks.

BEL’s aggression paid off in the 40th minute when captain Jenny Freddy served a sweet cross from the right to the goalmouth and Stephen paved the way for Musharraf to slot in the third goal.

The second half too began badly for Postal as they conceded a fourth goal, just three minutes after resumption.

Musharraf latched on to a loose ball and fed Aravind with a diagonal pass. The lanky forward struck his second goal with an angled shot from the right.

Luck deserted Postal in the 67th minute when a shot by Srinivas deflected out off the right-hand post. There was further misery in store as Jenny Freddy slotted home a spot-kick, awarded when substitute goalkeeper Selvaraj pulled down Aravind in the 84th minute.

Other result: ‘A’ Division: Government Press: 3 (Vijaya Babu 9th, 39th, 42nd) bt SWRI: 2 (Dinesh 30th, 56th).
Saturday’s matches: ‘A’ Division: Universal vs BHEL, 1.45 pm; Super Division: Royals vs DYSS, 3.45 pm.
