The mortal remains of Janata Pariwar leader and former chief minister S R Bommai was buried beside the tomb of his wife Gangamma at his family plot at Navanagar near Hubli on Friday.
The body of Mr Bommai, who died at Bangalore due to prolonged illness on Wednesday evening, was brought to his residence at Hubli at around 5:00 am on Friday, where it was kept for public viewing.
A host of leaders across the political spectrum paid their last respects to the departed leader. These included, former chief minister and Maharashtra Governor S M Krishna, Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council H K Patil, Union former minister Ananth Kumar, former deputy chief minister B S Yediyurappa, MP Prahlad Joshi, former MP I G Sanadi, Assembly former speaker B G Banakar, former ministers Jagadish Shettar, R V Deshpande, P G R Sindhia, Leelavathi R Prasad and Basavaraj Horatti, JD(S) leader and former minister M P Prakash, Aland MLA B R Patil, JD(U) State senior Vice-President Basavaraj Ingin, Raghu Lakkannavar among others.
At 1:00 pm, the body was taken in a procession from Bommai’s residence to the family plot at Navanagar and was buried with State honour at 3:50 pm. Thousands of people attended the funeral service amid elaborate security arrangements. As a mark of respect to the departed leader, the advocates in Hubli and Dharwad stayed away from the courts on Friday. Mr Bommai, before starting his political career, was a noted advocate at Hubli.
