A glance at this building and one may have to wonder if it is a boys hostel or a godown to dump commodities.
This is the College Boys Hostel situated near Gallihalli cross in Tarikere run by none other than the Department of Social Welfare.
The hostel started functioning in 1987 in a rented building in the City. Then due to the efforts of Town Municipal Council former president T R Nagaraj, this hostel was provided a site opposite to SJM College and the new building was inaugurated by MLA T H Shivashankarappa about three years ago.
Though questions were raised about the quality of the work even during the inauguration of the building, the affect of the sub-standard work is clearly visible today.
Of the 16 rooms in the building, only two rooms do not leak while the rest are in such bad condition that the students cannot dwell there.
During this rainy season, the students faced lot of problems. The heavy rains affected the electrification works of the hostel and the students had even suffered several shocks during their stay in the hostel this rainy season.
The emergency light facility costing about Rs 50,000 (6 batteries, invertor, UPS) are all lying obsolete due to inefficient handling of the same.
The surrounding of the hostel has turned out to be a safe abode for some of the dangerous snakes and insects. Though the students are living amidst problems, no authority has ever come to see the hostel.
