Mahatma Gandhi used the word ‘Satyagraha’ by modifying the word ‘Padagraha’. Interestingly, Magan Lal gandhi had directed Gandhi to use the word ‘Padagraha’.
The word ‘satyagraha’ originated from truth and non violence that became an indicator of moral strength. Gandhi started using the word ‘passive resistance’ as a synonym for ‘Satyagraha’ in English. In this way, Satyagraha which started in South Africa gained momentum in India, said Senior Gandhivadi, Bangalore Gandhivadi Pratishtana President Satyavrita.
Speaking at the workshop held under the aegis of Tumkur History Forum, Rural Development Organisation, Gandhi Monument Fund, he said violence has spread across the world for various reasons, Gandhivada and Satyagraha are the only medicine for violence.
Professor Dr M V Vasu presented an essay on Gandhi Satyagraha and said Satyagraha, which is the combination of truth and non violence is inspired from Buddha’s principles. Ashoka Chakravarti has shown the world that it was possible to rule a kingdom through non violence.
Thinker K Dorai Raju presented an essay on the relevance of Gandhi Satyagraha and said Gandhi has shown the world that it was possible to achieve human welfare through truth, non violence. Gandhi becomes more relevant in the current society which is closely associated with casteism, exploitation and terrorism.
Gandhi Monument Fund President senior Gandhivadi Professor H R Dasegowda presided over the workshop.
