Flabbergasting even the Leftists the Prime Minister and the UPA chairperson have dramatically nose-dived on the Indo-US nuclear deal.
Just a few days ago, the PM had dared the Leftists to withdraw their support to the UPA government if they could and immediately came the chivalrous declaration of Sonia Gandhi that those who oppose the deal are not only enemies of the Congress but also enemies of the country’s development.
It so appeared that the UPA coalition government which sustained all along with the adrenaline supplied by the Left parties no longer cared for their support and planned to proceed with the deal honouring the firm commitment they made to the US. Many thought that Sonia’s speech would work a miracle with the Leftist parties, which will ultimately yield to the deal. But no one believed that it would fizzle out as damp squib and disappear like dew before the rising sun.

India, the loser
Sir,
After negotiating for over two years and signing the 123 Agreement and making statements like “those who oppose the agreement are against national interest”, it is shameful that the Congress party and the government has put the whole agreement on the back burner just to remain in power.
They have now clearly shown that their self-interest rather than national interest is supreme. Only China and Pakistan benefit from this back tracking and the biggest loser is India.

Power hungry UPA
Sir,
Some time ago, the Prime Minister and the UPA chairperson had made it clear that the 123 nuclear agreement will go through further stages come what may. After their tough talk they had to face the wrath of the Left parties in no uncertain measure. Now they have got their tail behind their legs and submitted to the wishes of the Left.
They thought it prudent to let go off the agreement with the US and hang on to power. From now on the Left parties will always try to force the government to toe their policy line and block all progressive measures.

Nobel prize
Sir,
The reports of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), headed by an Indian environmental scientist R K Pachauri, indicates that planet Earth, is not an inanimate object but a living organism with myriad intricately inter-dependent life forms.
It also suggests that our environment is not a dumping ground for all the man- made wastes and its degradation will lead to global warming that will result in cataclysmic changes on the planet in the form of drought, floods, hurricanes and tsunamis.

They deserve it
Sir,
By awarding the Nobel Peace Prize for Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to former US Vice-President Al Gore, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has strengthened the campaign for action against global warming and climate change. The IPCC worked together with 3000 experts from 130 countries to find solution to this important issue. Both IPCC and Al Gore richly deserve this prestigious award.

Insurance cover
Sir,
It is astonishing to read that 17 firemen had heavy burns almost upto 50 per cent when they were discharging their duty to put off the fire in an oil shop in Bangalore on Friday. The main reason given is that the firemen are not provided with fire resistant suits. Hopefully the Governor will make immediate arrangements to provide this basic necessity, within a month and save some precious lives. They deserve a heavy insurance cover also.
