Prohibitory orders under section 144 were clamped in Banhatti town of Bagalkot district on Sunday, following an arson and violence during Eid-ul-Fitr and Navarathri celebrations.
As rumours of splashing green colours on the walls of some temples spread in the town, mob was on the streets and indulged in violence. Peace committee leaders and police officials tried to pacify the mob. Even as a peace meeting was on, a group set fire to some shops and threw stones in order to create violence.
Lathicharge
The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob. Later, prohibitory orders were clamped for three days.
Police sources said that 25 persons have been arrested in connection with incidents.
