Increase in wages sought
The Garment and Textile Workers Union (GATWU) on Sunday launched a two-month campaign to raise the statutory minimum wages to Rs 200 per day.
Thousands of GATWU members took part in a procession taken out from Banappa to the Senate Hall on Central College campus, where the campaign was inaugurated. In a city that houses around five lakh garment workers, the industry pays a worker mere Rs 93 per day - the statutory minimum wage fixed by the Government.
