The role of anaesthesia in pain management is incomparable. Anaesthetists are in a better position to manage things in a critical situation, said FMCI Director Fr Patrick Rodrigues.
Speaking at the World Anaesthesia Day celebrations organised by the Department of Anaesthesiology at Fr Muller Medical College here on Tuesday, he said that it is the plan of action between the surgeon and the anaesthetist that relieves the patient during a surgery.
Speaking on the evolution of Anaesthesia, he said that the seeds of it were sown in the 18th century when there were a number of researches held to reduce pain. However, it was discovered in the 19th century, and henceforth has developed as a unique branch of medicine that uses a variety of drugs, techniques and equipment.
Anaesthesia makes a patient comfortable during surgery and all this owes to the commitment of some people, Fr Rodrigues added.
Cardiac anaesthetist of the college Dr Subramaniam spoke on the scope of modern anaesthesia later. He said that 200 per cent of growth in anaesthesia work force took place in the last 30 years.
He described Anaesthesiology as the speciality of future and dinosaur of the past. An inter-collegiate PG Quiz competition was conducted later. Associate professor at KSHEMA Dr Sumalatha Shetty was the quiz master.
