AICC treasurer Motilal Vora, has a task on his hands now, as Ms Gandhi has appointed 11 general secretaries, six permanent invitees in charge of states and 35 secretaries, while only about 40 rooms are available on Akbar Road campus. This place has to accommodate various cells and administrative offices of the party as well.
The AICC leadership is already facing problems as some of the more aggressive secretaries have activated their “contacts” to get an office in the campus, even if it is at the cost of pushing out some of the existing secretaries from their offices.
“We have nine rooms in the main building and 14 in the extension,” Mr Vora says. In addition, there are some rooms in the makeshift structures in the campus, all erected illegally over the years in violation of the regulations banning any such construction in Lutyen’s Delhi bungalows.
Some of the secretaries, not so “well-connected” as some of their counterparts are, already seem to have resigned to their fates.
One of the secretaries, aware that a number of high-profile young people have been appointed secretaries this time, in fact, conceded as much, saying, “I will sit wherever the party asks me to. What matters is my work.”
However, under the present circumstances, all Congress leaders are desperate to seek an office in the AICC office, more particularly as Rahul Gandhi, appointed a general secretary in the reshuffle, is expected to visit AICC now.
While the other office bearers are still unsure about whether they would get office space, the office earlier occupied by general secretary Janardan Dwivedi, next to Sonia Gandhi’s office, is being spruced up with a feverish pace as it will now act as Rahul Gandhi’s office.
