STUDYING IN INDIA

Dear Sir,
My brother is doing BSc Nursing in Bangalore. He wants to join some IT courses (NIIT or Jetking) after the completion of his course and continue his career in the IT field. What should he do?

Asha

Dear Asha,
If he is very particular about getting into the IT field, and has the right aptitude for it, he can certainly switch over.  If he had taken Math in his PUC, he is eligible to do a three year Masters in Computer Applications (MCA), or he can take up an M.Sc in Information Technology. He can also explore the possibilities of technical writing, software testing, medical transcription or software development in medical field.  Private courses like NIIT or Jetking will give him the practical knowledge of the latest technologies in IT.

Dear Sir
We live in Singapore and plan to come back to India by next year.  My son is studying in Std 11 (CBSE) in the Indian International School, Singapore. He had studied from Std 4 to Std 7 in Bangalore. From Std 8 onwards he has been studying in Singapore. He would like to take up medicine after his Std 12. We are Indian citizens.

We will be extremely grateful if you can clarify our following queries:
1. As my son has already studied for 4 years in Bangalore, if he studies 12th Std in Bangalore next year, would he satisfy the requirement of 5 years of study in Karnataka to take up CET or COMED-K exams? Or would he still be considered an NRI?

2. If he is considered as NRI, which colleges offer NRI quota for medical admission. What would be the requirements (entrance tests/interviews etc) and approximate fees?

Ambika

Dear Ambika,
An Indian citizen who has studied five years in Karnataka, and has completed his 12th Std here is eligible to sit for CET exam as a local candidate.  However, I must caution you that rules do not remain the same from year to year, and with changes in government, new policies may come in. If you do not mind paying higher fees, your son stands a good chance through management quota and also in independent deemed universities that have their own admission process.

Dear Sir,
My daughter is studying in II PUC. She wants to do courses other than the usual ones like engineering, medical etc. Can you please suggest some good courses for her?

Anusuya Bharath

Dear Anusuya,
The choice of courses for a PUC Science student are unlimited. The list goes from administration to management to mass and visual communication, to design, various fields in computers, law, specialisations in marketing, paramedical sciences, travel, accountancy, education, human development …. it is endless. What is important is that you should help your daughter identify her strengths and weaknesses, her inclination and interest, and the ability to face competition. Only based on that she will be able to choose the right career that suits her.  Alternatively she may go for an aptitude test.

Dear Sir,
I am studying in Std X (CBSE). We have 50 chapters. How do I prepare myself for my board exams and cope with my home work at the same time? I need to study everyday. Please suggest a time table which will help me prepare for my exams and complete my home work for that day. I reach home at 5.30p.m.
Suppose I read a lesson today, I am not able to remember it completely the next day. Please suggest some ways by which I can improve my grasping, memory and concentration power.

K Lakshman

Dear Lakshman,
There are many proven methods of improving concentration and retention. Developing a genuine interest in the subject helps easier grasp, so connect your studies to real life. Start off by relaxation and nutrition before you sit down to study, select the right place, spend the first few minutes reading up most difficult or boring subjects, and when you are getting tired, go more towards revision. Take periodic breaks. Do a mapping of all the topics and sub-topics in each subject, and keep ticking them off as you learn them.  Follow the SQ(3R)T technique i.e. Survey, Question, Read, Revise, Recite, and Test.  You can pick up more tips from good books on improving concentration or memory. I have also written a book "Study Techniques" published by Banjara Academy (Ph: 23535787 23535766) Rs. 40, and another one on "Learning Difficulties (Rs.30)

Dear Sir,
After II PU I want to pursue my career in the Indian Air Force, so what are the career options in IAF after II PU? What are the courses offered? And the duration of the course? Is there any entrance examination for this course? Give me complete career guidance.

Adil M Shaikh

Dear Adil,
The Indian Air Force has various branches from flying, navigation, air traffic control, engineering, to administration, logistics, accounts, etc.  After 2nd PUC with Science you are eligible to sit for the NDA exam held by Union Public Service Commission (www.upsc.gov.in or www.careerairforce.nic.in). Depending on your merit ranking, you will be allowed to choose Army, Navy or Air Force, and then subsequently flying or other branches. You can also enter the Air Force after your graduation (in Engineering, Science, Commerce etc.) through Officers Training Academy

Dear Sir,
I finished my M.Com two years back, am doing nothing after my PG. Is CFA of ICFAI University a good course? Actually I am interested in artistic work as I want to do Commercial Art.

Preeti S Kasat,
Bagalkot

Dear Preeti,
Since you went up to Masters in Commerce and have not found an inclination towards the commercial field, adding another qualification like CFA may not help you much. If your interest lies in Commercial Art, please get yourself evaluated by an independent artist (not a private institute offering art courses) and see if you have a talent that matches your interest.  If yes, then you can start by taking up a short part-time course in visual communication, multimedia, animation or web-page design. With that you may be able to get an entry level job, and then you can continue upgrading yourself by learning the latest techniques in Commercial Art, and specialising in one specific area.

Dear Sir,
I am studying in 2nd PUC. I am going to write my exam in 2008. I have keen interest to do MBA. What exams should I take? On which subject should I concentrate?

Hema,
Chamarajanagar

Dear Hema,
Master of Business Administration (MBA) is open to graduates from any stream. So currently you need to select what field you would like to do your graduation in. While it is a fact that the best MBA colleges seem to be taking in a majority of engineering graduates, students from other streams also stand a good chance if they prepare in advance. Check where your interest and aptitude lie and take up a graduation course. Simultaneously, start brushing up your general knowledge, read up all the current affairs, improve your oral and written communication, and build up your personality. In your final year you become eligible to sit for entrance exams like CAT, MAT, XAT, ATMA, K-Mat, which, depending on your merit ranking, get you admission in management colleges of your choice.

Dear Sir,
My brother has just finished his B.Com, but he is interested in doing D.Pharm. Is there any possibility that he could get admission in any University? He lives in Hyderabad. Also is there any open university which offers D.Pharm?

Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,
D.Pharm (Diploma in Pharmacy) is open to any student who has completed 10th Standard, and is conducted by the State Boards of the respective State through institutions like polytechnics. B.Pharma (Bachelor of Pharmacy) is a four year degree course open to students who have completed 10+2 with Science, and is conducted in various colleges in every State.  Pharmacy courses are not available through open university system, but allied fields like hospital administration, nutrition and dietetics are available.
