State Of Emergency In Syria
Beirut, (Lebanon), Oct. 17.
The Syrian authorities today began issuing arms to people’s resistance movement volunteers,” the Arab News Agency reported tonight form Damascus.
The arms issue followed last night’s proclamation of a state of emergency. There were queues of volunteers today at recruiting centres. Damascus Radio instructed members of the “peoples resistance movement” to report to their local headquarters tomorrow.
Chundrigar Appointed Pak PM
Karachi, Oct. 17.
Mr I I Chundrigar, Leader of the Muslim League Assembly Party, was today appointed Prime Minister of Pakistan to succeed Mr HS Suhrawardy, who resigned last Friday.
A brief official announcement from the President’s house issued shortly afternoon today said, the President had commissioned Mr Chundrigar to form a new government.

Akali Volunteers Vacate Jails
Chandigarh, Oct. 17.
Akali Dal President Sant Harchand Singh Longowal has directed the Akali volunteers to vacate the jails, an official spokesman said here today. The spokesman said that following the directive, the President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), Mr GS Tohra, along with over 2,000 Akali volunteers, had already vacated the Central Jail at Ferozepur.
