We have moved away from our traditional practices and methods of water conservation as a result we now have to take refuge in scientific measures of water conservation, said Zilla Panchayat former president G N Naganna.
He was speaking at the rain water harvesting festival held at Keelarlahalli. Earlier great efforts were taken to see that the rain water seeped into the earth and the open wells were all full with water. Also, our elders never faced flurosis as the ground water table was good.
As a result they never had the need to conserve water in this manner, he added. People are now facing the problem of flurosis as the rains have come down drastically and the ground water table is depleting by the day thereby increasing the flurosis content in water, he observed. Thus, conserving water in a scientific manner is the only way in which this problem can be contained to an extent, he said.
This rain water festival has created a festive environs in all the houses in the village. Thus, it is an indication that the programme is a success among the villagers. This programme needs to be implemented in all the villages of the taluk, said ZP President Holavanahalli Krishnamurthy.
