Federer sails past Canas
Madrid, Reuters:
Roger Federer was at his dominant best as he crushed Argentine Guillermo Canas 6-0, 6-3 to take his place in the Madrid Masters quarterfinals on Thu-rsday.

Roger Federer was at his dominant best as he crushed Argentine Guillermo Canas 6-0, 6-3 to take his place in the Madrid Masters quarterfinals on Thu-rsday.

The world number one made a whirlwind start on the super-fast greenset surface at the Madrid Arena by rattling through the first set, leaving Canas totally bemused.

Third seed Novak Djo-kovic, Fernando Gonzalez, Mario Ancic, Nicolas Kie-fer and David Nalbandian also booked their places in the quarters.

Djokovic fended off a determined Juan Carlos Ferrero to win 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.

The 20-year-old Serb, who includes two Masters Series shields among his five titles in a breakthro-ugh season, started sharply and took the first set with some ease.

Ferrero fought back to push it to a third set, but Djokovic managed to hold off the battling Spaniard to clinch a win that sets up a showdown with Ancic.

The Croat, who beat Ja-mes Blake in the last round, claimed a comfortable 6-4, 6-3 win over Frenchman Paul-Henri Mathieu.

Last year's losing finalist Gonzalez breezed into the last eight with an emphatic 6-4, 6-2 victory over Argentine Juan Monaco.

The Chilean, who also lost to Federer in this year's Australian Open final, will meet Germany's Nicolas Kiefer who won 7-6, 7-6 against big-serving Croat Ivo Karlovic. Karlovic hammered 22 aces against his lower-ranked opponent but Kiefer survived the barrage to reach the last eight.

Nalbandian, a runner-up in Madrid in 2004, beat Juan Martin del Potro 6-2, 6-4 in their all-Argentine duel.

Henin advances

In Zurich, world number one Justine Henin eased into the quarterfinals of the Zurich Open on Thursday with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Russia's Vera Zvonareva, adds Reuters.

Chasing the ninth tournament of her impressive season, the Belgian was not at her dominant best as the match got under way -- squandering three early break points in Zvonareva's first two service games.

Henin will now face world number 31 Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarterfinals, after the Polish teenager managed a surprise 6-3, 6-3 win over Slovakian seventh seed Daniela Hantuchova.
