What drives persons to attempt suicide at the ‘corridors of power’ as Suresh from Mandya did on Friday right in front of the Governor?
If you go by psychiatrists then it is a behavioural trait that makes some people to forward a ‘Call Attention Motion’ in an abnormal way.
Suresh, 30, from Kadamuthinadoddi in Mandya district, made the fourth attempt on his life by consuming poison in front of the Governor on Friday. Prior to Friday, he had made a vain bid on August 12 this year by consuming poison in front of Vidhana Soudha. He was jailed and was released on Thursday. Soon after coming out, he again selected the same venue. Prior to it, he had attempted suicide for the first time in front of Vidhana Soudha, the second time was before the High Court.
Doctors at NIMHANS dub it as nothing but an attempt to attract attention. “If it is serious attempt then one should go into the details but in most of such cases, it is merely an attempt to attract attention only,” said Dr Nagaraj, Director of NIMHANS.
Head of the psychiatry department Dr Gangadhar holds behavioural trait responsible for such suicide attempts. “Such persons try to gain attention. Most of such attempts are not serious,” said Dr Gangadhar. Such behaviours develop since childhood when the person wants to be in the limelight to have his demands met. Such traits also develop due to some unhealthy practices like drug abuse, he believed.
Serious depression too drives a person to take such extreme step, for which the patient should pursue Yoga or undergo psychotherapy.
